Because Halifax County is situated at the cusp of two major intersecting highways, there are numerous ways to enter it. One route, Interstate 95, stretching between Florida and Maine, runs through the center of the county. It is the major interstate carrying people and cargo up and down the East Coast. Alternately, Highway 158 runs east and west, eventually cutting across I-95 just about twenty miles south of the Virginia border. It is one of the main highways leading from the center of the state to the fareastern counties of Northampton, Hertford, and Gates.
How does the contrast between the ideal of “progress” and the reality of stagnation impact their communities? In other words, where do these women, their families, and their friends work? What inﬂuences do state and industry economic decisions have on local communities, given neoliberal rhetoric’s focus on free-market competition? And ﬁnally, how do “progressive” people explain the continuance of racialized inequality in government and electoral politics? entering halifax county I made my ﬁrst official trip to Halifax as an ethnographer on a lazy Sunday afternoon to look for housing.
In addition to the personal tensions my research raises, I found both beneﬁts and limitations to conducting research from the perspective of an insider. During my months of ﬁeld research, the limitations were most evident in the type of information that was given. Drawing out details of women’s salvation experiences and why they believe was at times difficult because they assumed my knowledge of the subject and my ability to translate their tenets of faith. They did not feel compelled to explain what salvation is or how they received it.
