9 Common emitter characteristic curves. T Voutput v input Fig. 10 Switching behavior of a transistor circuit. A standard circuit that illustrates the usefulness of this switching behavior is illustrated in Fig. 10. A S-volt source and a resistor are placed in series with the transistor. When reverse bias is placed on the base of the transistor, the transistor does not conduct and its resistance appears to be very large in comparison to R 1 • Therefore, if the voltage drop were measured between source and ground, it would appear almost entirely across the transistor.
Its purpose is to control the various parts of the microcomputer. The arithmetic logic unit, shown at the lower right, is a set of combinatorial networks that perform arithmetic and logical operations on data. The computer's normal operating function is to read instructions from memory, to execute those instructions, and to write results back to memory. This is known as the 'machine cycle'. Several components of the microprocessor are instrumental in executing that cycle. We will discuss these components beginning with the program counter.
2 2's complement arithmetic The rules for subtracting binary numbers are as follows: 0-0=0 1-0=1 1-1=0 o- 1 = 1 (borrow 1) Consider the subtraction of 10tO from lItO: 1 1 10M 101 0 S 0100 D=M-S Microcomputers generally perform subtraction operations using addition. The most widely used method is called 2's complement arithmetic, which is a special format of binary numbers in which the leftmost position is reserved for the sign of the number. A 0 represents the plus ( + ) sign and a 1 represents the minus ( - ) sign.
