This is the basis of what is known as the 'ayahuasca effect' [see Methods of Ingestion, Banisteriopsis ]. Some MAOis have been shown to induce pineal N-acetyl transferase activity (Finnin 1979); and MAO-A inhibitors also increase pineal levels of N-acetyl-serotonin and melatonin, an effect which was negated by coadministration of propranolol, a P-adrenergic antagonist. High doses [or chronic administration of! ow doses] of MAO~B inhibitors also inhibit MAO-A (King eta!. 1982; Nathan 1998; Oxenkrug 1999).
Green light is the most effective wavelength in suppressing retinal HIOMT (Finnin 1979). Some experiments stimulated the pineal gland with blue-green light at 509nm (Lyttle 1993), and as noted above, wavelengths in this part of the spectrum are more effective in suppressing melatonin production (Wright & Lack 2001). It has even been shown experimenta1ly that exposure to different colours can greatly enhance production of serotonin, norepinephrine, ~-endorphin, melatonin, AChE, oxytocin, growth hormone, luteinising hormone and others, as well as increasing the effectiveness of some enzymes by up to 500%.
