Rohrer, a manufacturer of flour and cornmeal from Quarryville, Pennsylvania. ”45 Why did Lindbergh’s flight so beguile the American imagination? It was, to be sure, audacious and unprecedented, but so too were the Wright brothers’ first fl ights and the Army world fl ight, neither of which elicited the same intensity of emotion. According to biographer A. Scott Berg, Lindbergh fulfi lled a cultural need for a national hero— a need that Americans acutely felt in 1927. S. newspapers carried grim headlines about the Teapot Dome scandal and an anarchist who had blown up an elementary school in Michigan, killing thirty-eight children and six adults.
It would ultimately take thirty-three and a half hours, passed mostly in darkness over open water. Lindbergh later said that he had remained awake only due to the periodic rolling and pitching of his plane. Although he had brought five sandwiches and a jug of water, he scarcely ate or drank; at one point, he experienced hallucinations of ghostly forms moving through the cockpit. It was a test of physical and psychological endurance as much as flying skill— a test that Lindbergh survived, he said, by imagining himself and his plane as symbiotic beings.
