With 4 figures. Introduction. The various species of the genus Drosera have always attracted the attention of both the botanist and the layman. No doubt this is due mainly to the conspicuous leaves with their numerous tentacles, each bearing a drop of mucilage on its tip, and to the fact that the Drosera species are carnivorous. The observation that Drosera is capable of movement and capturing small insects was made by ROTH in 1779, but it was not until the middle of the nineteenth century that a good picture of the direction and rapidity of the movement was obtained by the many original observations of NITSCHKE and DARWIN.

In this case also very low concentrations are sufficient to obtain these effects as is demonstrated by Fig. 10, and the effect was completely restricted to the zone of application. Other inhibitors such as arsenite, iodoacetate, phlorizin and fluoride have been tested, but they cause a more general inhibition of the processes of absorption, accumulation and translocation. It is well-known that the sensitivity of living material to inhibitors is a very variable one, and consequently, the results obtained in the experiments discussed here can also be expected to be somewhat variable.

Translocation does not show much specificity and it takes place according to concentration gradients. However, it is too fast for normal diffusion, the more so as preliminary results with indolacetic acid suggest that very weak concentrations may suffice. Accelerated diffusion seems to be the best description of the phenomenon, for the time being, and a spreading along interphases the best explanation for this rapid diffusion, as the molecular heat movement of the solutes is then restricted from a three-dimensional to a two-dimensional space.
