Performance of the type was considered ideal. It could carry a maximum freight load of 112,800 pounds over 2,700 miles. By now, the price tag had risen to around $12 million per aircraft. Shortly after Flying Tigers put its -63s into service, the carrier reported that pilots were having braking problems when landing on wet runways at the 240,000-pound maximum landing weight. Douglas flooded a runway at its small Yuma, Arizona test center. During a series of high-weight landings, serious hydroplaning was experienced.
The next step was to marry the bigger wing and longduct pods with the stretched fuselage, which produced the DC-8-63 model. Though originally intended to have the same power plants as the model 62, the -63 was upgraded with JT3B-7 engines, rated at 19,000 pounds static thrust, allowing an MTOW increase to 350,000 pounds for the passenger model and 355,000 pounds for the freighters. It could carry the maximum of 269 passengers over a 4,500-mile sector. Part of the reason for the shorter range of the model 63 was an increase in drag over the -62 created by the larger "wetted" area of the stretched fuselage.
